Make it easy for people to approach you
Have you got a Linked in page for your company and for yourself? Does your company page advertise when you are recruiting? How easy is it to get in touch with hiring managers on a key appointment? Do people have to go through the hurdle of an application form, preparing a CV and making and on line applications? Given the premise that good people are usually happy in their jobs it is important to take a different strategy to accessing and interacting with these sort of people.
Some of the larger property companies are using their in house recruitment managers to constantly link in in a non- threatening way with potential long term candidates. How much easier for a candidate then to respond to an in mail or a call from someone they are already aware of through this medium and how much more receptive may they be to a direct approach from a director who six month earlier was clever enough to start making contact with people in the key markets he was looking to recruit in.
Make it easy to engage with your company and yourself. Empower every member of the team as an ambassador for the company. They should be able to talk to people at networking and social events in the knowledge that any references passed on will be followed up with discretion and they will gain credit for doing so.
Groups on linkedin is an excellent way of interacting with targeted people you may want to approach in the future. You may join one of the popular generic groups such as Estates Gazette or Property week, RTPI, RICS or one of the more specific groups such as FM professionals or London residential property group, Starting and responding to discussions will raise the profile of both you and your company and will become an important part of the branding message you send out.
You may choose to advertise jobs specifically in any of the groups however quality of response can be variable and is not dissimilar to running a job advert. More importantly you can also search groups members and are allowed to contact them directly, either to enter into a more general discussion or to tell them that you are likely to be recruiting. Putting all your wares out in the open does not usually work in this medium, I think of it rather like asking someone to marry you on a first date. In general senior level people need to know they can trust you before you can be explicit about your intentions. Think long term.
