Minding the gap is an important part of constructing a robust long term career strategy. Put simply it is reviewing and acting on gaps between the skill set needed for where you are now and where you want to be- and sometimes this is something that is best done in consultation with others because they can point us to things we do not know.
Have you made time to look at the next step in your own career and considered how to place yourself in the market? If you are considering a change of career have you analysed job adverts and descriptions for the roles you are seeking?
If you had to compare your own background against these roles with a critical eye where do you perceive you need to make changes and gain further skills?
What plans have you got to take you there?
Who are the influencers in the market that you need to know?
Do they know about you?
Part of the analysis we do with our career coaching candidates is to consider their long term career aims and plans in light of their career history and personal strengths
We then analyse the gaps in knowledge and experience which they need to fill to move them onto the next level.
It sounds like a simple exercise but most of us can be blind to our own strengths and weaknesses and can take our eye off the ball in terms of how the market is changing.I love to work with the example of the Johari window (see below)
